Alexandre Montfort

Alexandre Montfort (born May 12, 1803 in Paris , † February 12, 1856 there ) was a French composer .

Alexandre Montfort studied piano as well as harmony and counterpoint with François-Joseph Fétis and composition with Henri Montan Berton at the Conservatoire de Paris . In 1830 he won the deuxième Premier Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata La dernière nuit de Sardanapale behind Hector Berlioz . He started the stay at the Villa Medici in Rome associated with the award together with Berlioz.

After a trip to Germany, he returned to Paris in 1835, where he composed the operatic pantomime La Chatte métamorphosée en femme based on Charles Duveyrier and Jean Coralli . The work was premiered at the Paris Opera in 1837 and was on the program of the house for several years.

Montfort composed a number of other music-dramatic works, all of which were performed at the Opéra-Comique , as well as songs and piano pieces.
