John Braham , actually Abraham Braham (born March 20, 1774 in London ; died February 17, 1856 there ) was an English opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Braham, who was an orphan at an early age, received his education from his uncle, the tenor Michael Leoni . In 1787, in honor of his teacher, he sang for the first time in the Covent Garden Opera . After further training by the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini in Bath, he first worked as a piano teacher. From 1794 he worked again as a singer and was engaged by Stephen Storace at the Drury Lane Theater in 1796 . There he made his debut in the opera Mahmoud . After he was also successful with Italian operas in London, he went to Italy in 1798 with the soprano Nancy Storace . There he performed in Florence, Milan, Genoa, Livorno, Venice and Trieste. In 1799 both took part in the world premiere of the opera Il Ritratto by Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli at La Scala in Milan . In 1800 he went to Hamburg and returned to England in 1801.

In 1801 he made his debut at Covent Garden Opera in The Chains of the Heart by Joseph Mazzinghi and William Reeve , and then sang at the Lyceum Theater and Her Majesty's Theater .
