Christopher Thomas Tamer (born November 17, 1970 in Dearborn , Michigan ) is a former American ice hockey player and coach who played 681 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins , New York Rangers and Atlanta Thrashers between 1989 and 2006, among others has played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Tamer took part as a player in two world championships and once again as assistant coach of the women's national ice hockey team of the United States .

Career

Tamer spent part of his junior career first in the North American Hockey League with the Redford Royals, for which he was active between 1987 and 1989. Then the defense attorney moved to the University of Michigan because of his studies . There he played in the following four years until 1993 - parallel to his studies - for the university team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the Wolverines he won the division championship in the 1991/92 season. In addition, after his first year in the college league in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990, he was selected in the fourth round in 68th position by the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League .

After graduation, Tamer was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins before the 1993/94 season . The defender was initially used by the Cleveland Lumberjacks , the Pittsburgh farm team , in the International Hockey League , but also sporadically played in the NHL in his first professional season. Due to the lockout at the beginning of the NHL season 1994/95 , the defensive player initially collected further game practice with the Lumberjacks in the IHL, before he was able to get a place in the NHL squad of the Penguins after the player lockout . He maintained this for the following three seasons until the beginning of the 1998/99 season when he was given to the New York Rangers in November 1998 together with Petr Nedvěd and Sean Pronger in exchange for Alexei Kowaljow and Harry York . With the Rangers he ended the game year, but then went unprotected by the Rangers in the NHL Expansion Draft in 1999 , where he was selected by the newly formed Atlanta Thrashers .

The experienced tamer played a leading role in the Thrashers in the following years. In his second year with Atlanta, he completed his best NHL season with 17 points scorer, which earned him an early extension of his expiring contract in March 2002. Due to another lockout, which canceled the entire 2004/05 NHL season , the American played his last games for the Thrashers in the 2003/04 season . He himself did not play any games for another team in the 2004/05 season, as he completely recovered from a back injury suffered in January 2004. It was not until the 2005/06 season that the defender returned to the ice and ran 14 games for the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League . He then ended his active career at the age of 36.

International

For his home country Tamer played at the World Championships in Norway in 1999 and in Sweden in 2002 . He could not place himself in the medal ranks with the national team in both events and ended the tournament with one scorer point.

Tamer recorded his third World Cup participation at the 2016 Women's World Cup as assistant coach of the United States women's national ice hockey team , with the US women winning the gold medal under the leadership of head coach Ken Klee .
