Performance venues
- In order to make the Dianabad in Vienna - Leopoldstadt , which was reopened in 1843 , usable in the bathing winter season, the swimming pool is covered and the swimming pool is decorated as a concert and ballroom. In the years that followed, Eduard Strauss and Carl Michael Ziehrer , among others, made their debut in the Dianabad Hall , which opened on November 12 , and the waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube composed by Johann Strauss (son) had its triumphant premiere here in 1867 .

- 15th January : Court Opera Director Carl Ecker conducts the first subscription concert of the Vienna Philharmonic in the Theater am Kärntnertor .
- On November 1st , the theater on Franz-Josefs-Kai in Vienna, built by the opera tenor Karl Treumann according to plans by the architect Ferdinand Fellner , opens. The building site on Morzinplatz was created by razing the Vienna city walls in 1858 . The Treumann Theater plays an important role in establishing the Viennese operetta .
- The young and largely unknown architect Charles Garnier surprisingly wins the architectural competition for the construction of the new Paris Opera . The 15 year construction of the Opéra Garnier will be his life's work.
New compositions
- Jacques Offenbach dedicates the student polka to Clara Schüler .
- Franz Liszt reworked his setting of the poem Die Lore-Ley by Heinrich Heine .
- Franz Berwald completes his duo for violin and piano in D major , on which he has been working since 1857.
- Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein composes his soirées à Saint-Petersbourg. Six piano pieces op.44.
- Ivan Petrovich Larionov composes and writes the popular Russian song Kalinka .
- The French composer Hector Berlioz begins work on the opera Béatrice et Bénédict, based loosely on William Shakespeare's comedy Much Ado About Nothing . The work had its world premiere in 1862 .

- November 26 : At the Paris Opera is Jacques Offenbach's ballet -Pantomime Le Papillon in the choreography of the famous dancer Marie Taglioni premiered. The performance turns out to be a triumph, thanks also to the skills of the young ballerina Emma Livry .
Instrumental music
- March 3rd : The final version of the 1st Serenade by Johannes Brahms under the direction of his friend Joseph Joachim is premiered at the Royal Court Theater in Hanover . The orchestration , which was completed in January and for which Brahms borrowed music from Joachim, is the result of an in-depth study of serenades by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and symphonies by Joseph Haydn . In the same year, the serenade's sister work, the 2nd Serenade in A major, Op. 16, was published by the composer.

- Konrad Max Kunz composes the Bayernlied . With the text of the teacher and publicist Michael Öchsner , it will be presented for the first time on December 15 by the Citizens Singers' Guild Munich , at that time the most important lay association for the care of singing and music in the Kingdom of Bavaria . The piece soon became a popular folk song . Almost a hundred years later, the song was elevated to the official hymn of the Free State of Bavaria with a slightly modified text as the Bavarian hymn .

- February 7 : Stanisław Moniuszko 's opera Hrabina ( The Countess ) is premiered in Warsaw .
- February 10 : Jacques Offenbach's one-act revue Le carnaval des revues with a libretto by Eugène Grangé, Philippe Gille and Ludovic Halévy is premiered in Paris at the Bouffes-Parisiens Theater, in the Salle Choiseul.
- February 18 : The world premiere of the opera Philémon et Baucis by Charles Gounod takes place in Paris .
- March 27th : The operetta Daphnis et Chloé by Jacques Offenbach is performed for the first time in the Salle Choiseul of the Bouffes-Parisien theater in Paris. The libretto is by Louis François Clairville and Jules Cordier (Élénore Tenaille de Vaulabelle).
- May 7th : The comic opera Rita ou Le mari battu by Gaetano Donizetti , composed in 1841, is premiered posthumously at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The original French libretto was written by Gustave Vaëz . The title role will be sung by Caroline Lefèbvre Faure .
- August 3rd : The world premiere of the comic opera La Colombe by Charles Gounod takes place in Baden-Baden.
- September 1 : The one-act opera L'Auberge des Ardennes by Aristide Hignard based on a libretto by Jules Verne and Michel Carré has its world premiere at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris.
- October 11 : George Alexander Macfarren's opera Robin Hood premieres at Her Majesty's Theater in London's Haymarket.
- November 24th : The operetta Das Pensionat by Franz von Suppè has its world premiere at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The piece based on the model of the Paris operetta is considered to be the first Viennese operetta and heralds the so-called “ golden operetta era ” in Vienna. The librettist is only indicated with the initials CK and has not yet been identified.
- December 6th : The world premiere of the opera Bianca or The Bravo's Bride by Michael William Balfe takes place in Covent Garden in London.
- December 24th : Jacques Offenbach premieres his stage work Barkouf, known as opéra-bouffe in three acts , at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto is by Eugène Scribe and Henry Boisseaux.

science and technology
A sound recording was made on a phonautograph constructed by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville three years earlier : The French folk and children's song Au clair de la lune was recorded on April 9 , 17 years before the invention of the phonograph by Thomas Alva Edison . It is the oldest surviving sound recording.
