Orpheus Quadrille

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Orpheus Quadrille is a quadrille by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 236). It was performed for the first time on April 18, 1860 in the restaurant Zum Großes Zeisig in Vienna.

Remarks

The quadrille was composed of motifs from the operetta Orpheus in der Unterwelt by Jacques Offenbach . The highlight of the work is the well-known Can-Can from the operetta. The Quadrille was originally announced for a concert on April 15, 1860 in Vienna's Volksgarten . In fact, the work does not seem to have premiered until three days later in the establishment of the large Zeisig . The Quadrille and Offenbach's operetta were well received at the time.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 5 minutes and 37 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
