Giuseppe Antonio Ceruti (* 1785 in Sesto ; † 1860 in Mantua ) was an Italian violin maker. He was the only son and successor of the violin maker Giovanni Battista Ceruti .

life and work

Shortly after he was born, his family moved to Cremona . There is evidence that he worked for his father around 1805. His "career" as a violin maker was anything but clearly predestined and straightforward. Accordingly, he was registered in Cremona alternately as a “wood turner” and “instrument maker” for the next decade. In 1817, at the age of 32, he inherited his father's workshop. But the years after his father's death were rather quiet years in terms of the violin trade. In order to make ends meet financially, Ceruti also worked as a wood carver and professional double bass player during this time. Even in the 1830s and 1840s, he does not seem to have worked regularly as an instrument maker. In 1838 Ceruti moved to Mantua with his family . He also appears to have lived in San Benedetto for a while in the early 1850s before returning to Mantua in 1856. He made two violins for the Paris World's Fair in 1855 . For these two violins he received an honorable mention at the world exhibition.

Against this somewhat unsteady life background of the violin maker Giuseppe Antonio Ceruti, there are very few violins by him in circulation. His style is clearly indebted to his father. His instruments often bear the label of his father Giovanni Battista. Giuseppe Antonio Ceruti only signed the instruments he built after his father's death, when he modernized the production method a little. Giuseppe Antonio Ceruti died in Mantua in 1860. His son Enrico Ceruti continued the family's violin making tradition.
