from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enrico Ceruti , also Riccardo Fabio Ceruti (* 1806 in Cremona ; † 1883 ibid), was an Italian violin maker. He was the son of the violin maker Giuseppe Antonio Ceruti and the grandson of Giovanni Battista Ceruti . He is considered to be the instrument maker who completed the traditions of the Ceruti family and Cremonese violin making.

life and work

Enrico Ceruti was born as Riccardo Fabio Ceruti in Cremona, but became known as Enrico Ceruti in the field of violin making, as evidenced by the two initials "RFC" and "EFC" he used on his labels. He was trained by his father and, like him, was a professional double bass player. Enrico left his parents' house and was registered as a violin maker in Cremona in 1830. In the 1840s and 1850s, Enrico probably made violins together with his father.

Few of his instruments from before 1840 have come down to us. In general, Enrico Ceruti's violins are highly accurate, sometimes based on the models of his family's instruments, sometimes based on his own designs. Ceruti advertised his instruments in many European cities. However, he only received high recognition in Italy. This was probably due to the fact that he did not offer the del Gesù models preferred in France and England in the 19th century as replicas in the Stradivarius and the Guarneri tradition. Instead, he had developed his own model, which was in the line of tradition of his father and great-grandfather as well as in the Bergonzi tradition. Although Enrico Ceruti worked highly productively well into his 70s and dealt intensively with old instruments by Luigi Tarisio and Jean Baptiste Vuillaume , he could not achieve great wealth with his company. Gaetano Antoniazzi was one of his students .

Enrico Ceruti and the Ceruti dynasty in general followed the traditions of Storioni and Bergonzi and represented a direct link to the Italian violin makers of the 20th century. Enrico Ceruti died in Cremona in 1883.
