Edward MacDowell
Edward Alexander MacDowell (born December 18, 1860 in New York City , † January 23, 1908 there ) was an important American composer and pianist .
MacDowell received piano training from Teresa Carreño and from 1876 studied in Paris with Antoine François Marmontel and Marie-Gabriel-Augustin Savard , in Wiesbaden with Louis Ehlert and with Joachim Raff and Carl Heymann at Dr. Hoch's Conservatory (Frankfurt am Main). In 1888 he returned to the United States and founded the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough , New Hampshire . He worked as a composer and pianist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years . In 1896 he became the first professor of art and music at Columbia University in New York City .
As the first American composer ever, he won the respect of Europeans. His fame is based on his piano works and the setting of poems by German poets such as Heine and Goethe .
