Narcisse Girard

Narcisse Girard (born January 27, 1797 in Mantes-la-Jolie , † January 17, 1860 in Paris ) was a French conductor.

Life

Narcisse Girard studied violin with Pierre Baillot and composition with Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatory . After completing his training in 1820, he stayed in Italy for several years. He then led various orchestras in Paris: first the Orchester des Théâtre-Italien , from 1836 the Orchester der Opéra-Comique and from 1849 to 1859, as the successor to François-Antoine habeneck, that of the Société des concerts du Conservatoire . He was also chief conductor of the Imperial Orchestra and the orchestra of the Académie Impériale de Musique and taught at the Conservatoire de Paris.

On November 23, 1834, Girard conducted the world premiere of the symphony Harold en Italie by his friend Hector Berlioz , who had already dedicated the overture to his opera Les Francs Juges to him. He was awarded a Knight of the Legion of Honor.
