Michael Nagnzaun

Michael Nagnzaun OSB (born March 19, 1789 in Salzburg as Josef Nagnzaun ; † September 9, 1860 in Dornbach ) was an Austrian clergyman and musician.

Life

Michael Nagnzaun was born on March 19, 1789 as the son of the Prince Archbishop's gunner Franz Nagnzaun and Maria Theresia Forster in the city of Salzburg and was subsequently baptized in the name of Josef. His brother, more than eleven years older, was Albert Nagnzaun (1777-1856), who also became a Benedictine and from 1818 to 1857 was the 79th abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg. In 1806 Josef Nagnzaun entered the St. Peter monastery in Salzburg, where he was given the religious name Michael. After finishing school, he studied theology at the University of Salzburg . On his 21st birthday he made his profession on March 19, 1810 and was ordained a priest on December 21, 1811 . On August 12, 1812, he became a curate . Due to his great musical talent, Nagnzaun was appointed Choir Rain in St. Peter in 1813 . In addition, he was a professor at the Academic Gymnasium Salzburg from 1817 to 1819 and was at the same time chaplain in the Benedictine Abbey of Nonnberg on the fortress mountain of the same name in Salzburg. Afterwards he worked as a pastor and musician in Wieting ( Carinthia ) from 1819 ; there he was appointed pastor and administrator the following year . In 1837 he came from the parish church in Wieting as a pastor to the then still independent community of Dornbach at the gates of Vienna , where he stayed until his death. Michael Nagnzaun, who made great contributions to the transmission of early music throughout his life, died on September 9, 1860 at the age of 71 in Dornbach. His works include various sermons , several Tantum ergo , antiphons for Vespers and funeral offices , several masses ; numerous manuscripts and other parts of his works are now in the music archive of St. Peter.
