Polka mazurka champêtre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Polka-Mazurka champêtre is a Polka - Mazurka by Johann Strauss II (op 239th). The work was first performed in the summer of 1860 either in Pavlovsk or in St. Petersburg .

Remarks

This polka exists in two versions. The first version is a choir and orchestral version. The second version is a new version for a four-part male choir and two horns. However, the composer had probably already thought of a male choir with the first version. There were already corresponding notes, but no text. The work was created in the summer of 1860 while Johann Strauss was on another trip to Russia. Neither the exact place nor the date of the premiere in Russia are known. The first performance in Vienna took place on November 25, 1860 in the Volksgarten . A male choir consisting of 14 people took part. A year later came a new version of the Polka (male choir with two horns as an accompaniment), with the text Where do the songs sound like, please sit down . Both versions were soon forgotten and rarely performed, if at all. This was also due to the fact that the composer's many compositions sometimes displaced each other from the concert schedule. There was simply an oversupply of such works.

The playing time of the first version is 4 minutes and 53 seconds on the CD listed under individual records. The second version runs 4 minutes and 27 seconds. These times may vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
