Romance No. 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The . Romance No. 2 is a composition by Johann Strauss II (op. 255). It was first performed around 1860.

Remarks

The work exists in two versions, both based on the original composition by Johann Strauss. This took place in the summer of 1860 during another trip to Russia by the composer. The date and place of the premiere are not known. The first performance of Romance No. 2 in Vienna took place on December 1, 1860 in the dance hall Zum Sperl at the same time as the performance of Romance No. 1 . An orchestral version was never printed. Max Schönherr provided the first version on the CD recording mentioned below by arranging the piano version. A score of the original work was later discovered in Russia. The second CD was recorded on the basis of this, which is different from the first and corresponds to the original. In both versions, the cello is the main instrument.

Incidentally, opus number 255 is assigned twice. In addition to Romance No. 2, the St. Petersburg Quadrille also bears this opus number. This is probably due to an oversight by the publisher.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 4 minutes and 41 seconds (first version) or 3 minutes 55 seconds (second version). These times may vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
