- In the United States, the patriotic song Dixie by Daniel Decatur Emment is released.
- Georges Bizet completes his opera Don Procopio based on a libretto by C. Cambiaggio (based on L. Prividali). The work was not premiered until March 10, 1906 in Monte Carlo.
- Giacomo Meyerbeer composes the festival march for Schiller's birthday .
- Franz Liszt writes his Trois paraphrases de Concert in which he processes themes from Verdi operas.
- The string quintet in F major op. 59 by Anton Grigorjewitsch Rubinstein is published.
World premieres
Instrumental music
- January 22nd : At the world premiere of the 1st Piano Concerto by Johannes Brahms at the Royal Court Theater in Hanover under the direction of Joseph Joachim , the composer himself sits at the piano. Another performance will take place on January 27 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. The reviews are devastating.
- February 20 : The 2nd symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns has its world premiere.
- March 28 : Joseph Joachim premieres Johannes Brahms' 1st Serenade in six movements in Hamburg . In December, Brahms asked Joachim Musikpapier with the intention of “ turning the work into a symphony ”.
Musical theater
- February 17th : The opera Un ballo in maschera ( A masked ball ) by Giuseppe Verdi is premiered with triumphant success at the Teatro Apollo in Rome. The libretto is by Antonio Somma based on the drama Gustave III. ou Le bal masqué by Eugène Scribe . The abbreviation VERDI becomes a symbol for the Italians' struggle for freedom .
- March 19 : The world premiere of the opera Faust by Charles Gounod takes place at the Théâtre-Lyrique in Paris. The work with the libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré based on Goethe's Faust I was a great success from the start.
- March 31 : The play Lohengrin by Johann Nestroy and Carl Binder has its world premiere at the Carltheater in Vienna. The piece parodies the opera Lohengrin by Richard Wagner , Nestroy's second such piece after the Tannhauser travesty . In contrast to the latter, the audience and critics reacted disappointed this time.
- April 4 : The first version of the Opéra-comique Dinorah ou Le pardon de Ploërmel by Giacomo Meyerbeer has its world premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The libretto is by Jules Barbier with the collaboration of Michel Carré on the basis of his story Les chercheurs de trésor . At the end of the year there will also be a German-language premiere at the ducal court theater in Coburg.
- May 15 : Luigi Ricci's last opera Il diavolo a quattro is premiered at the Teatro Armonia in Trieste . The libretto is by Gaetano Rossi.
- June 8 : The world premiere of the opera L'Omelette à la Follenbuche by Léo Delibes takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- July 6th : The world premiere of the operetta Les Vivandières de la Grande Armée by Jacques Offenbach takes place at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- June 22nd : The French operetta Un Mari à la Porte ( A husband at the door ) by Jacques Offenbach based on a libretto by Alfred Charlemagne Delacour and Leon Morand has its world premiere at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.
- November 19 : The comic opera Geneviève de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach is premiered at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris.

- Friedrich von Flotow's opera La Veuve Grapin is premiered in Paris.
- Albert Grisar is also publishing his opera Voyage autour de ma chambre in Paris .
- William Vincent Wallace is performing his opera Lurline for the first time, based on a libretto by Edward Fitzball. The premier will take place in Covent Garden in London.
- César Cui 's opera The Mandarin's Son was also premiered in 1859.

- November 24 : 16-year-old Adelina Patti makes her operatic debut in the role of Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti . This marked the beginning of a meteoric career as a coloratura soprano .
- Soon after the execution of abolitionist John Brown on December 2nd, the song John Brown's Body became popular in the United States.
