Jacint Boada i Casanoves , OSB , (* 1772 in Terrassa ; † 1859 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan choirmaster , organist , composer and monk from the Montserrat Monastery.

life and work

Boada attended the Escola de Montserrat from 1780 to 1786 . Anselm Viola and Narcís Casanoves were his teachers there. In 1790 he joined the Benedictine order.

Before and after the French War , which reached the monastery in 1811, Boada was head of the Escolania de Montserrat . After returning to the monastery in 1818, Boada composed some sacred pieces for worship and some teaching pieces for teaching purposes. In 1822, at the beginning of the liberal triennium , the monks and students had to leave the monastery again. They were able to return in 1824. Due to another expulsion from the monastery in 1835, Montserrat had to be abandoned again.

However, Father Boada returned there in 1840, reintroducing the cult behind closed doors alone with his brother Josep Campderrós and a student. During this time the famous Montserrat song Salve Montserratina was brought into being by Father Boada. In 1851 Boada established the Escola again with great energy .

Boada had very good students who later all became composers or organists. B. Blanch, R. Palau, B. Saldoni, J. Parera and M. Pontí are mentioned here. The style of his music, which often complains about the strong political and social adversity, is formally correct late Classical and adapted to the liturgical and educational requirements of the time.
