Hunter polka

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jäger-Polka is a French Polka by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 229). The work was first performed on July 14, 1859 in Pavlovsk , Russia.

Remarks

The polka was composed during the composer's trip to Russia in 1859 and successfully premiered under the title Tirailleur-Polka in Pavlovsk and dedicated to the officer corps of the hunter battalion of the Tsarskoye Selo Guard . In Vienna the work was given the title Jäger-Polka and was played there for the first time on November 20, 1859 in the Volksgarten . However, the translation from French is incorrect. Tirailleur can be better translated as Sagittarius . Accordingly, the work should be called Schützen-Polka . This name would also correspond more to the musical character of the work. The current title name probably goes back to the dedication to a hunter battalion mentioned above.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 13 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
