Arthur Friedheim ( Russian Артур Фридхайм ; born October 14 . Jul / 26. October  1859 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 19th October 1932 ) was a Russian-German pianist and composer.

Friedheim began his musical training at the age of eight and already performed in the following years. a. with John Field's Piano Concerto in A flat major and Carl Maria von Weber's concert piece. He then studied with Anton Rubinstein before becoming a pupil of Franz Liszt .

He worked in Paris, London, Munich, Vienna, Berlin and Leipzig and moved to the USA in 1915. Here he was twice offered the direction of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra , which he turned down both times in favor of his pianistic career. From 1921 he taught in Toronto. Colin McPhee and Rildia Bee Cliburn , mother of pianist Van Cliburn, were among his students .

In addition to his pianistic career, Friedheim worked as a composer for life. He composed several operas, including The Last Days of Pompeii , Alexander and Thais and Die Tanzerin , two piano concertos, the orchestral overture A Hero of our Times and the March E pluribus unum . Many of his works were lost in the turmoil of World War II.
