Colin McPhee

Colin McPhee (born March 15, 1900 in Montreal , † January 7, 1964 in Los Angeles ) was a Canadian composer .

Life

McPhee studied in Baltimore with Gustav Strube , in Toronto with Arthur Friedheim and in Paris with Isidore Philipp . From 1931 to 1939 he lived in Bali , where he studied folklore and music-ethnology. Since 1958 he has taught at the University of California .

He composed two symphonies , the orchestral Toccata Tabuh-Tabuhan , Iroquois dances for orchestra, Balinese sacred music for two pianos, a concerto for two pianos and orchestra and a concerto for piano and wind instruments. He also wrote about the music and culture in Bali.
