Life

Türpe was the eighth child of the hosiery Carl Ferdinand Türpe and his wife Amalie. Türpe's musical talent developed early on. The father, a village musician in Mohsdorf, recognized his youngest son's talent and gave him trumpet lessons.

In 1874 Hugo Türpe began his apprenticeship with the city music director Grau in Mittweida . It was here that the influential musician Böhme became aware of the young talent and recommended it to the Gewerbehaus music director Mannsfeld in Dresden , who accepted Türpe into his orchestra .

In 1881 , the man who had already been named “Master of the Pistons” received the honorable appointment to the Berlin band , led by the Royal and Court Music Director Benjamin Bilse .

A period of extensive concert tours began both in Germany and in other European countries.

He quickly became famous among music lovers: in the Amsterdam Grand Theater alone , he performed in over fifty successive performances in front of his audience. In Erfurt in 1883 he met the composer and piano virtuoso Franz Liszt . He was full of praise for the masterly technique with which Türpe mastered his instrument.

In 1886 Hugo Türpe undertook a major tour of America accompanied by his 69-year-old mother (his father had died in 1879 ) . He has made guest appearances in many cities in the United States. His concerts even took him to the court of the Emperor of Brazil . Newspapers reported on guest appearances in Australia and the West Indies .

From 1889 he performed with the Burgstädter Stadtmusikchor under the direction of Clemens Graupner and again undertook concert tours in Saxony and throughout Germany.

On one of these tours - in Munich  - he suddenly fell ill and had to break off the trip. On July 2, 1891, at the age of 31, Hugo Türpe succumbed to tuberculosis and the resulting exhaustion, according to the findings of doctor Dr. Pohl.

He was buried in the old cemetery in Burgstadt. There, however, nothing reminds of him today: His grave and the stone were removed in the previous century.
