Johann Ernst Benjamin Bilse (born August 17, 1816 in Liegnitz , Silesia , † July 13, 1902 there ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Bilse learned the profession of “city music”, in this training he learned how to use almost all of the orchestra's instruments. In Vienna he took violin lessons from the famous violinist Josef Böhm and played in the band of Johann Strauss (father) . In 1842 he was appointed director of the Liegnitz city band. From 1867 the ensemble, which was now called the “Bilse'sche Kapelle”, played in the Berlin Concerthaus on Leipziger Strasse . The legendary “Bilse Concerts” took place here, more than three thousand in number, which Adolph Menzel , among others, immortalized in an oil painting (1871). Extensive concert tours took the musicians across Europe, including to St. Petersburg, Riga, Warsaw, Amsterdam and Vienna and in 1867 to the World Exhibition in Paris, where Johann Strauss (son) conducted the Danube Waltz with them .

In 1882 there was a dispute with the musicians, 54 of Bilse's best-trained musicians separated from him and founded the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (the orchestra was called this until it was converted into the “Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker ” in 2002). Bilse did not remain idle and immediately founded a new orchestra.

The Benjamin Bilse Society, headed by Jochen Georg Güntzel, researches his life and work. He was a member of the Liehnitz Freemason Lodge Pythagoras to the three heights .

Works

Bilse composed numerous waltzes , polkas , quadrilles and marches , 42 of which were printed.
