Leonhard Schulz (* 1814 in Vienna ; † April 27, 1860 in London ) was an Austrian guitarist and composer . As a guitar virtuoso , he was known throughout Europe at the time.

Life

As a child, Schulz was taught to play the guitar by his father, who worked as a guitarist in Vienna . At the age of eight he performed in Vienna both as a solo artist and in a duo with his two years older brother, the pianist Eduard Schulz . In 1825 Schulz traveled to London with his father and brother, where they gave concerts for the king six times. Eleven-year-old Leonhard was already known as a “guitar master” at that time. After spending three years in England , Schulz and his family returned to Vienna. Concert tours to Germany, France and again to England followed. Leonhard Schulz, like his brother, settled there permanently in 1830.

Works

Schulz's work comprises more than a hundred pieces. In addition to his own compositions, this also includes numerous transcriptions of works by other composers that he arranged for the guitar.
