Louis-François Dauprat (born May 24, 1781 in Paris ; † July 16, 1868 there ) was a French horn player , composer and professor of horn at the Conservatoire de Paris .

Life

Louis-François Dauprat first studied at the "Maîtrise" of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral , until it was closed in 1790 due to the turmoil of the revolution. From 1794 he attended the (natural) horn class established by Joseph Kenn at the newly founded “Institut national de musique”, from which in 1795 the Paris Conservatory emerged. In 1797 Daupart won the first ever "Premier Prix". As a prize he received an Inventionshorn from the leading workshop of Lucien-Joseph Raoux (1753–1821) in Paris at the time . Today the instrument is one of the impressive showpieces of the Conservatoire Museum in Paris. From 1800 he worked in various military bands, but from 1801 took lessons in harmony and composition with François-Joseph Gossec and Charles-Simon Catel . Between 1811 and 1814 he received further music theory lessons from Antonin Reicha .

From 1806 to 1808 he was principal horn in the orchestra of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux , from 1808 to 1811 in the Paris Opera Orchestra and at the Paris Conservatory. At both institutions he succeeded Johann Joseph Kenn and soon afterwards also that of the famous principal horn player Frédéric Duvernoy . He was principal horn player in the royal and imperial court orchestras and permanent soloist in the chamber music of King Louis Philippe . From 1828 to 1838 he was principal horn at the “Société des Concerts du Conservatoire”. In 1842 Daupart resigned from all his offices.

He wrote his numerous compositions especially for his students for didactic purposes. He only played and taught the natural horn , but was very interested in the first attempts at keyed horns .
