Charles-Simon Catel (born June 10, 1773 in L'Aigle , today in the Orne department , † November 29, 1830 in Paris ) was a French composer .

Charles-Simon Catel was the son of the Huguenot Pierre Frédéric Catel (1747-1791) and his wife Elisabeth Wilhelmine, née Rousset (1757-1809), born. His father was an assessor at the French court in Berlin. His brothers were the architect and painter Ludwig Friedrich Catel (1776-1819), and the painter Franz Ludwig Catel . His sister was Francoise Henriette Catel (born February 28, 1781 in Berlin, † July 18, 1781 in Berlin).

At the age of 11, Catel came to Paris on the recommendation of Antonio Sacchini , where he was accepted into the Ecole Royale de Chant et de Déclamation because of his musical talent . His teachers were François-Joseph Gossec and Louis Gobert (piano). As early as 1787 he assisted his teachers and became a musical accompanist (Accompagnist) at the Paris Opera. In 1790 he was elected 2nd conductor of the Corps de musique de la Garde nationale de Paris . In 1795 he became professor of harmony at the newly established Paris Conservatory and shortly thereafter was awarded the contract to write a textbook for this subject, which was to be used in this institution. As a result, Catel's Traité d'harmonie became one of the most widely received music theory works in France, which was reprinted and translated into various languages ​​until the 20th century. In 1810 he was appointed inspector of the conservatory. From 1814 onwards, Catel decided to only work as a freelance composer and music theorist. At the Institut de France he was from 1822 to 1823 chairman of the Commission des Fonds et de la Commission Administrative Central .

Along with his teacher Gossec, Catel is one of the initiators of the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix in Paris and at the same time an important composer of French revolutionary music (Marche, Pas Redoubles, hymns, etc.) and is one of the founders of the literature for symphonic wind orchestras in wind music research considered. Still, he was a versatile composer.
