Carl Martin Reinthaler also written Karl Reinthaler (born October 13, 1822 in Erfurt , † February 13, 1896 in Bremen ) was a German composer , conductor and head of the cathedral choir in Bremen.

biography

Reinthaler grew up as the son of the theologian and head of the Martinsstift Karl Christian Reinthaler in Erfurt and attended the royal high school there . He received his first musical training from the later Magdeburg cathedral organist August Gottfried Ritter . From 1841 he studied theology and then music with Adolf Bernhard Marx in Berlin . From 1844 to 1849 he was a member of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin . As a royal scholarship holder, he studied in Paris and Rome from 1849 to 1853 . In 1853 he got a job at the Conservatorium der Musik in Coeln . Here he completed his first oratorio Jephta and his daughter .

From 1857 to 1893 he shaped the musical life of the city of Bremen as city music director, cathedral organist and as head of the Singing Academy. He successfully performed major orchestral works. In 1868 he played a major role in the rehearsal of a more complete version of the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms - which was expanded compared to the partial premiere by the Wiener Singverein under Johann von Herbeck - although he then left the musical direction of the performance to Brahms himself.

In 1859 he became the master songwriter of the men's choir "Liedertafel". From 1868 he was vice president of the artists' association in Bremen . In 1872 he took over the leadership of the Bremen Cathedral Choir . Many of his sacred compositions show that his role model was Moritz Hauptmann , but he found an idiosyncratic musical language, and he also proved to be a skilful instrumentator. Critics accused him of a certain one-sidedness. B. rejected Wagner works . His own works such as the operas Edda (1874) and Käthchen von Heilbronn (1881) were unsuccessful. In 1888 he was appointed professor by the Bremen Senate . In the last years of his life he had to use a wheelchair and he was less and less able to take part in the music.
