August Gottfried Ritter

August Gottfried Ritter (born August 25, 1811 in Erfurt , † August 26, 1885 in Magdeburg ) was a German composer and organist .

Life

At an early age, Ritter received piano and violin lessons from the Erfurt organist of the Augustinian Church, Andreas Ketschau. Michael Gotthard Fischer was also one of his sponsors . Ritter attended the Augustinian pre-school, the Ratsgymnasium and finally, from 1828, the teachers' college in Erfurt.

In 1831 he became organist at the Erfurt Andreaskirche; in the same year also teacher at the Augustiner and Andreas schools. In 1832 and 1833 he attended weekly piano and improvisation lessons with Johann Nepomuk Hummel in Weimar .

In 1834 he was given a ministerial scholarship for six months and then for a short period of time to take lessons in Berlin with Ludwig Berger (piano and composition), the Sing-Akademie director Carl Friedrich Rungenhagen (conducting) and August Wilhelm Bach (Organ). In Berlin he also had contact with the music historian Carl von Winterfeld and the music collector Georg Poelchau .

From 1835 he worked again in Erfurt as an organist at the Andreas Church and as a teacher at various schools. In 1837 he founded the sensational soirees .

Since 1839 organist at the Erfurt Kaufmannskirche , Ritter went to Merseburg as cathedral organist in 1844 and three years later to Magdeburg cathedral .

Ritter appeared as an editor of organ music as well as an organ expert.

In 1845 he received the title "Royal Music Director" and in 1880 was appointed professor. His numerous works on the history of organ music made him one of the founders of musicology . As a composer, he also created important works, especially in the field of organ music.
