Carl von Winterfeld

Carl Georg Vivigens von Winterfeld (born January 28, 1784 in Berlin , † February 19, 1852 in Berlin) was a German musicologist .

origin

His parents were Karl Friedrich Gotthilf von Winterfeldt (* May 17, 1757; † September 14, 1824) heir to Menkin and Wollschow, and his wife Sophie Elisabeth Helene Wilhelmine von Köhler (* March 28, 1754; † April 13, 1821).

Life

Carl von Winterfeld studied at the then University of Halle jurisprudence in 1816 in Breslau appointed judge. After his return to Berlin in 1832 he was appointed senior tribunal councilor and in 1839 an honorary member of the Prussian Academy of the Arts . Winterfeld was a founding member of the Bach Society and since 1835 a member of the Lawless Society in Berlin . Carl von Winterfeld is considered to be the rediscoverer of Heinrich Schütz . In 1812 he went on a trip to Italy, where he made copies of compositions from the 16th to 18th centuries. The collection is now kept in the Berlin State Library. Carl von Winterfeld was a sponsor of Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Out of gratitude, Hoffmann von Fallersleben dedicated the song collection “Siebengestirn gevatterlicher Wiegen-Lieder for Frau Minna von Winterfeld” to him or his wife Wilhelmine “Minna” von Winterfeld and their children.

He married Wilhelmine von Thümen (* June 20, 1789, † November 1, 1845). The couple had several children including:

  • Siegismund, godfather Hoffmann von Fallersleben,
  • Rudolf (March 22, 1829 - July 23, 1894) ∞ Pauline von Roeder (January 5, 1845 - August 15, 1914)
