May 22 : Richard Wagner lays the foundation stone for the Bayreuth Festival Hall .

The Vienna City Theater shortly after it was built

September 15 : The Vienna City Theater , built by the architects Ferdinand Fellner the Elder and Ferdinand Fellner the Younger for a private company of the journalist Max Friedländer and the playwright and playwright Heinrich Laube , opens with Schiller's Demetrius in an adaptation of Laubes.

October 13 : The Finnish National Theater opens in Pori .

Antonín Dvořák : 1st piano quintet completed. Premiere 1877.

January 15 : The world premiere of the opera Le roi Carotte by Jacques Offenbach takes place in the Théâtre de la Gaîté in Paris.

January 18 : The opera Fantasio - also by Jacques Offenbach - is premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. Offenbach brought out two world premieres within three days.

March 21 : The world premiere of the opera Hermione by Max Bruch takes place at the Hofoper Berlin .

May 22nd : The opera Djamileh by Georges Bizet based on the libretto by Louis Gallet is premiered at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.

October 12th : Ludwig Anzengruber's play Die Kreuzelschreiber has its world premiere at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. The music for the peasant comedy with singing comes from Adolf Müller senior .

November 2nd : Premiere of the operetta Cannebas by Franz von Suppè at the Carltheater in Vienna.

November 16 : The world premiere of the operetta Sol-si-ré-pif-pan by Georges Bizet takes place at the Château d'Eau in Paris.
