Arthur Farwell
Arthur Farwell (born April 23, 1872 in Saint Paul / Minnesota , † January 20, 1952 in New York City ) was an American composer.
Farwell earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1893 before moving to Boston to study with George Whitefield Chadwick and Homer Norris . Here he also took composition lessons from Edward MacDowell .
On a trip to Europe he took lessons from Engelbert Humperdinck and Hans Pfitzner in Berlin in 1897 and from Alexandre Guilmant in Paris in 1898 . After his return he taught at Cornell University from 1899 to 1901 and then founded the music publisher Wa-Wan Press in Newton Center / Massachusetts , which was dedicated to the publication of contemporary American music and was merged with Gustav Schirmer's music publisher in 1912 . He was also a music critic for New York's Musical America magazine from 1909 to 1914 .
From 1915 to 1918 he headed the Music School Settlement in New York and then taught at the University of California at Berkeley and from 1921 to 1925 at the Music and Art Association in Pasadena . From 1927 to 1939 he headed the music theory department at Michigan State College in East Lansing . The composers Dika Newlin and Roy Harris were among his students .
Farwell composed several symphonic works, two stage plays with Indian themes, several works for choir and orchestra, a violin sonata, a piano quintet, piano pieces, choirs and songs.
