Jan van Boom

J (oh) an van Boom (born September 15, 1807 in Utrecht , † March 19, 1872 in Stockholm ) was a Dutch composer, pianist and music teacher.

The son of the flutist and composer of the same name was a student of Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Ignaz Moscheles . He started his career as a pianist. After a concert tour in 1825, he settled in Stockholm as a piano teacher. In 1849 he became professor of piano at the conservatory. On a trip to Europe in 1862 he studied the system of music education in different countries. In 1865 he retired from teaching.

Van Boom published a piano school. He composed symphonic works, chamber music and piano works as well as the opera Näcken (1844). His brother Herman van Boom became known as a flautist.
