Camillo Schumann (born March 10, 1872 in Königstein , † December 29, 1946 in Bad Gottleuba ) was a late romantic German composer and organist .

biography

Camillo Schumann was born in the spring of 1872 as one of twelve children of the town music director Clemens Schumann senior. (1839–1918) and his wife Camilla Ottilie, b. Müller, born in the Stadtpfeiferhaus in Königstein. His older brother was the composer Georg Schumann ; other siblings were Alfred Schumann (1868–1891), most recently concertmaster with the Bremen Philharmonic , and Clemens Schumann jun. (1876–1938), from 1900 to 1936 violinist in the Dresden Staatskapelle .

Camillo Schumann received his first lessons, like his brothers, from his father and learned several instruments during his early childhood. From 1889 to 1893 he was briefly trained at the Dresden Conservatory and then at the Leipzig Conservatory by Carl Reinecke , Salomon Jadassohn , Bruno Zwintscher , Paul Homeyer and others. In the years 1894 and 1895 he studied with Woldemar Bargiel and Robert Radecke in Berlin .

During his time in Berlin, Schumann was acting as an organist in a number of larger churches. On October 1, 1896, he accepted the position of full-time organist at the main church of St. Georg zu Eisenach and at the Wartburg chapel there. In 1906 he was awarded the title of Grand Ducal Saxon Music Director and Court Organist .

Schumann organized numerous organ and chamber concerts in Eisenach - some with the participation of his brothers Georg and Clemens junior. - and was particularly committed to maintaining the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in his hometown.

In April 1914 he moved to Bad Gottleuba , took on a few church music engagements near his place of residence, but devoted himself increasingly to his compositional work apart from his courtly duties. Schumann died here on December 29, 1946. His grave still exists today. A memorial stone was erected in his hometown Königstein in 1972 .
