Salomon Jadassohn
Salomon Jadassohn (born August 13, 1831 in Breslau ; † February 1, 1902 in Leipzig ) was a German composer , pianist , music theorist and music teacher .
Life
Salomon Jadassohn received his first musical training in Breslau from Moritz Brosig . His teachers were Moritz Hauptmann at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1848 and Franz Liszt in Weimar from 1849 to 1851 .
After completing his studies, Jadassohn took over the position of conductor of the choir of the Leipzig synagogue . In the late 1860s he conducted the Euterpe Concerts in Leipzig. In 1871 he came to the Conservatory in Leipzig; here he held the position of a teacher of music theory, piano and composition. He enjoyed an excellent reputation as a music teacher. In the 1880s he was the conductor of the Gdansk Concert Society. When he was appointed conductor of the Philharmonic Choir and the orchestra of the Bremen Opera , he succeeded Martin Traugott . He later went back to Leipzig, where he died in 1902.
His compositional work is very diverse. It includes symphonies , serenades for orchestra, overtures , piano concerts , chamber music , piano pieces, choirs , songs as well as vocal duets and sacred works. Jadassohn published many of his works under his pseudonym "Olivier". He also published several music theory writings, which at the time received great attention. Jadassohn's works and writings have largely been forgotten today.
Salomon Jadassohn was married to the singing teacher Helene Friedländer (1843-1891). His son Alexander Jadassohn (1873–1948) became a music publisher; his daughter Beate (1878 until after 1955) worked as a children's book author under the names Beate Frederich and Beate Jacoby .
