Euterpe (music society)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euterpe was an orchestral association in Leipzig that existed from 1824 to 1886 .

Euterpe was founded in 1824 as a lovers' association and attracted younger Leipzig musicians. The day of the concert was Tuesday and the season lasted from October to March. These were subscription concerts, but tickets were also available individually.

The venues for the concerts were the Leipzig Booksellers' Exchange , the Central Hall , the Old Theater and, from 1885, the Old Gewandhaus .

Today the former Euterpe Orchestra in Leipzig continues under the name "Sinfonischer Musikverein Leipzig". Frank Lehmann has conducted it since 1994. Around 3 to 4 concerts take place every year. Today's concerts mainly take place as part of the Markranstadt Music Summer in the St. Laurentius Church in Markranstädt and in the New Gewandhaus in Leipzig.

history

In 1824 the orchestra association "Euterpe" was founded.

In 1838 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann were accepted into the circle of honorary members.

In 1901 there was a split into “Berger's Orchesterverein” and an unidentified club owned by Karl Schwerin, which dissolved in the First World War .

In 1922 “Berger's Orchesterverein” was renamed “Leipziger Orchesterverein”.

In 1923 the "Leipziger Orchesterverein" and the orchestra "Musikalische Vereinigung Leipziger Gemeindebeamter" founded in 1921 became the "Musikalische Vereinigung Leipzig e. V. “merged.

In 1948 the "Musikalische Vereinigung Leipzig e. V. ”in the symphony orchestra“ Euterpe ”.

In 1953 all music associations in the GDR were dissolved - including the "Euterpe" symphony orchestra - and joined the "Great Orchestra in the Leipzig Folk Art Ensemble German-Soviet Friendship" (DSF). In 1989/90 the collapse of the GDR also resulted in that of DSF.

On May 15, 1990 (after the reunification of Germany) the orchestra members at that time founded the “Sinfonischen Musikverein Leipzig e. V. ”, which in 1991 also became a founding member of the regional association of Saxon orchestras.

Since then, the Orchestra Sinfonischer Musikverein Leipzig has continued to establish itself in Leipzig and the surrounding area.

The orchestra still has some old text fonts and still manages the very extensive original sheet music, which can be traced back to the time it was founded. Some of these notes are still used in concerts.
