In the Russian village

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Russian village there is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (op. 355) called Fantasy . It was performed for the first time on September 17, 1872 in Baden-Baden .

Remarks

The work was originally intended for another trip to Russia by the composer. Hence the title name. He did not take this trip, however, in breach of an already concluded contract, because he preferred a visit to the United States of America on the occasion of the World Peace Anniversary and an international music festival in Boston . The breach of contract then led to an unsuccessful civil suit for Strauss, which ended with a fine for the composer. The fantasy in the Russian village then he played after returning from the United States in Baden-Baden, where he lodged on the way to Vienna for a stopover. The work was dedicated to Madame la Baronne de Gase, who was visiting Baden-Baden at the same time as a spa guest. In Vienna the piece was first performed on January 1, 1873 in the concert hall of the Wiener Musikverein under the direction of Eduard Strauss . After that, the work does not seem to have been played very often. The orchestral version was lost. The CD recording mentioned below is based on an arrangement by Max Schönherr .

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 7 minutes and 19 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
