Eyvind Alnæs

Eyvind Alnæs (born April 29, 1872 in Fredrikstad , † December 24, 1932 in Oslo ) was a Norwegian composer, organist and choir director.

Life

Alnæs was born in Fredrikstad in 1872 . His father was the school principal Johannes Jørgen Lauritz Alnæs (1835-1916), his mother Elise Martine Hansen (1851-1931). From 1903 to around 1925 he was married to Emilie "Milly" Thorne, with whom he had two children. He was the father of resistance fighter and writer Lise Børsum (1908–1985) and the grandfather of the writer Finn Alnæs (1932–1991) and the actress Bente Børsum (1934).

In 1888 he learned the piano with Westye Waaler, the organ with Peter Brynie Lindemann and harmonics , counterpoint and composition with Iver Holter at the Kristiania Conservatory . With the recommendation of Edvard Grieg , he received a scholarship from the AC Houens Foundation in 1892, with which he continued his composition studies in Leipzig with Carl Reinecke . Grieg wrote: "Mr. Alnæs showed me some of his songs that show clear talent ... I therefore warmly recommend him for any public support."

In 1895 Alnæs returned to Norway and became organist in the church of Bragernes in Drammen .

His first symphony, Op. 7, he completed in Berlin in 1897, where he learned the piano from Julius Ruthardt .

He composed two symphonies , variation symphoniques , a piano concerto, piano pieces, choral preludes for the organ, choirs and songs in the late romantic style. He was one of the co-founders of the Norwegian Composers Association.

Alnæs was awarded the Royal Gold Medal of Merit in 1922 and, ten years later, the Order of St. Olav, knight 1st class.
