Josef Wenzig (* 1807 in Prague , Austrian Empire ; † August 28, 1876 in Turnov , Austria-Hungary ) was a Bohemian writer and librettist .

Life

Wenzig was educator in aristocratic families, rector of the Czech secondary school in Prague and from 1833 professor of German language and geography . During his teaching activities, he also worked on equating the Czech language with the German language in schools (Lex Wenzig). He was the head of the artists' association ( Umělecká beseda ) and met Bedřich Smetana there.

Works

Wenzig tried his hand at writing and wrote a play that was positively reviewed by Jan Neruda . As a playwright, however, he was insignificant for his time. His libretti, which he wrote first in German and then translated into Czech, are better known , Dalibor and Libuše , both set to music by Smetana . Many of his poems were set to music by Johannes Brahms : op. 31/2 + 3; op. 43/1; op. 48/1 + 4; op. 49/3; op. 61/4; op. 69/1 + 2 + 3 + 4; op. 75/3; op. 104/4.

He also translated Czech / Slovak songs, poems, fairy tales and sagas into German - including the Slovak folk fairy tale Von den Twelve Months , which was filmed several times.
