Christine Nilsson de Casa Miranda (born August 20, 1843 in Vederslöv , Småland , † November 21, 1921 in Växjö ), born Kristina Jonasdotter , was a Swedish opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Christine Nilsson was born on the farm Sjöabol (also called "Snugge"), south of Växjö, to poor parents (Jonas Nilsson and Cajsa-Stina Månsdotter). The von Snugge family soon moved to Lövhult, a few kilometers south, after their father became insolvent.

There she had to help provide for the family, among other things as a guard at the stone " Lövhulta fåle ". Her singing saved her money on a violin. During the following years she performed at markets and sang and played with “Blinde Janne” from Gränna , among others . At that time she was commonly called " Stina på backen " (" Stina on the hill "). Her singing talent was discovered in 1857 in the market in Ljungby by a patron who financed her singing training in Gothenburg . After completing her training, she traveled to Paris in 1864 and made her debut in Giuseppe Verdi's opera La traviata . In the following years she performed on various stages in Europe, America and Russia and achieved a reputation as one of the greatest singers of her time. Her partners on stage included Charles Santley , Allan James Foley , Hugh Talbot and Victor Capoul .

After a successful concert in Stockholm on September 23, 1885, Christine was celebrated by around 50,000 people. As she sang from a balcony of the Grand Hotel, panic broke out, killing 20 people.

Christine Nilsson was married twice: in 1872 with the French banker August Rouzeaud (died 1882) and in 1887 with the Spaniard Don Angel Ramoin Maria Vallejo y Miranda, Count de Casa de Miranda. She therefore bore the title Countess de Casa Miranda. She lived in Sandsbro near Växjö from 1906 until her death in 1921 and was buried in the Tegnér cemetery in Växjö.
