Percival J. Illsley

Percival John Illsley (* 1865 in Cheddleton , Staffordshire , † October 13, 1924 in Montreal ) was a Canadian composer, organist, choir director and music teacher.

Illsley was a student and assistant to the organist at Lichfield Cathedral and then worked as an organist in Grendon / Warwickshire and at Holy Trinity Church in Queensbury / Yorkshire . He also worked as a choir director.

From 1891 to 1924 he was organist and choirmaster at the Anglican St George's Church in Montreal . In addition, he worked from 1895 to 1899 at the Dominion College of Music , 1903 at the Montreal Diocesan College and from 1904 to 1908 at the McGill Conservatory . His students included George M. Brewer , Orpha-F. Deveaux and Arthur Egerton . From 1920 to 1922 he was President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists .

His most important work is the cantata Ruth (1894), which was premiered in St George's Church in 1896 . He also composed hymns , anthems , songs and organ works.
