February 1 : The world premiere of the operetta Boccaccio by Franz von Suppè , the composer's most successful stage play, takes place at the Carltheater in Vienna. The libretto is by Camillo Walzel and Richard Genée .
March 29th : The opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is premiered by students of the Moscow Conservatory under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein at the Moscow Maly Theater . It is based on the eponymous verse novel Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin .
