- March 29th : The opera Eugene Onegin by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is premiered by students of the Moscow Conservatory under the direction of Nikolai Rubinstein at the Moscow Maly Theater . It is based on the eponymous verse novel Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin .
- October 18th world premiere of the comic opera Die Fornarina by Carl Zeller in the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich.
