Ernest Read (born February 22, 1879 in Guilford / Surrey , † October 9, 1965 in London ) was an English conductor and music teacher .

Read was best known as a pioneer in the field of youth symphony orchestras. In 1926 he founded the London Junior Orchestra , which in 1931 became the Ernest Read Symphony Orchestra (ERSO), which is still active to the present day . His youth orchestras have performed in schools, concert halls and studios of the BBC . In 1945 he founded the Albert Read Concerts for Children at the Royal Festival Hall . At the Queenswood School he introduced courses for rhythmic education according to Émile Jaques-Dalcroze from 1921 , and he directed the London School of Dalcroze Eurythmics . In 1956 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
