Alfrēds Kalniņš

Alfrēds Kalniņš (born August 11, 1879 in Cēsis , † December 23, 1951 in Riga ) was a Latvian composer .

Life

Alfrēds Kalniņš studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory . From 1903 to 1911 he was organist and music teacher in Pärnu , then until 1915 in Liepāja , until 1918 in Tartu and finally in Riga . Between 1927 and 1933 he lived in New York . On his return he became a cathedral organist in Riga. From 1944 to 1948 he headed the city's conservatory.

He composed two operas, a ballet, an orchestral suite, six cantatas, choral music, organ and piano pieces. Best known was his four-act opera, Baņuta (1920), which is considered the first national Latvian opera. His son Jānis Kalniņš was also known as a composer.
