Harold Samuel

Harold Solomon Samuel (born May 23, 1879 in London ; † January 25, 1937 there ) was an English pianist and composer .

Samuel studied piano with Edward Dannreuther and composition with Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London . In 1898 he made his debut in London with Bach's Goldberg Variations . With his concerts focused on the work of Bach he was not very successful at first, so that he also worked as a piano and singing teacher and as a piano accompanist (with the violinist Isolde Menges, among others ). He had his breakthrough as a pianist in 1919 with a performance of Bach's complete works for piano in London. In 1921 he played Bach works in a six-part cycle in London and New York. From 1924 he made regular concert tours through the USA. He also gained a reputation as a Brahms interpreter and in 1925 played Herbert Howell's Piano Concerto . As a composer, Samuel emerged with songs, piano pieces and the musical comedy Hon'ble Phil .
