Julia Claussen

Julia Claussen (born June 11, 1879 in Stockholm ; † May 1, 1941 ibid) was a Swedish opera singer (alto) and vocal teacher.

Life

Claussen studied from 1898 to 1902 at the Royal Conservatory of Stockholm with Oscar Lejdström . In 1903 she made her debut as Leonora in La favorite by Gaetano Donizetti at the Stockholm Royal Opera, of which she was a member until 1912. In 1910 she participated in the world premiere of the opera Arnljot by Wilhelm Peterson-Berger in Stockholm . In the following years she made guest appearances in Berlin, Vienna, London, Paris and Brussels.

From 1913 to 1917 Claussen was engaged at the Chicago Opera. There she sang Kundry in Wagner's Parsifal in 1914 . She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1917 as Dalila in Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila . Until 1932 she sang 15 major roles here, including Amneris in Verdi's Aida , Brünnhilde in Die Walküre and Venus in Tannhäuser by Wagner, Lubava in Sadko by Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow , Laura in La Gioconda by Amilcare Ponchielli , the witch in La Campana sommersa by Ottorino Respighi and the mother in Fra Gherardo by Ildebrando Pizzetti .

From 1934 to 1940 she was professor of singing at the Stockholm Conservatory. In 1938 she appeared again as Amneris at the Stockholm Opera. Since 1912 Claussen was a member of the Swedish Academy of Music. In 1919 the Swedish king awarded her the order of Litteris et artibus , and in 1923 she was appointed court singer.
