Musa Kart

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Musa Kart (* 1954 in Yeniceoba ) is a Turkish cartoonist . Among other things, he worked for the Cumhuriyet newspaper , where a cartoon of him has appeared every day since 1994. In 2006 he received the Press Freedom Prize of the Turkish Journalists Association . Musa Kart was arrested in October 2016 along with other Cumhuriyet journalists and employees on suspicion that his work had supported the PKK and the Gülen movement . He was one of the more than one hundred Turkish journalists imprisoned in 2016 and 2017 . On July 28, 2017, five days after the trial of 17 Cumhuriyet employees began, Kart and six other Cumhuriyet employees were initially released, but sentenced to three years and nine months in prison in April 2018.

Life

Kart first published a cartoon in 1974 while studying engineering in Ankara. In 1983 he gave up the engineering profession and devoted himself professionally to drawing. He published his caricatures for example in the publications Milliyet , Güneş , Günaydın, Cumhuriyet and the magazine Nokta. From 1994 a daily cartoon by Kart appeared in a regular column of Cumhuriyet. He had been a member of the editorial team there since 1993.

Arrests and charges

Criminal proceedings for portraying Erdoğan as a cat led to the Yargıtay . This overturned the judgment of the lower court (fine of 5,000 YTL) in 2005. In 2014 he was also charged with defaming and insulting Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with a cartoon about the corruption scandal in Turkey in 2013 , for which he was threatened with a nine-year prison sentence. However, the competent court dropped the charges on the first day of the hearing.

As part of the measures taken after the attempted coup in Turkey , the police and public prosecutors took action against the Cumhuriyet newspaper in October 2016 and arrested twelve employees, including Musa Kart and its editor-in-chief Murat Sabuncu . The allegation was that through their work they had supported the terrorist organization PKK and the Gülen movement , which is believed to be responsible for the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 . Interviewed shortly before the actual arrest, Kart said:

“You can't explain that to the world. I'm being arrested for drawing cartoons, just cartoons. I think everyone will be able to relate that to each other "

Kart was taken to Silivri Prison for pre- trial detention . He shared the cell with the journalist Kadri Gürsel and the publicist Turhan Günay , who both also worked for Cumhuriyet.

The indictment was presented in April 2017. The trial of Kart and 16 other Cumhuriyet employees began on July 24, 2017. He was released from 271 days of pre-trial detention on July 28, 2017, but remained on trial. On April 25, 2018, he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison on charges of terrorist support. In February 2019, the Istanbul Court of Appeal dismissed Karts and 13 other Cumhuriyet employees' appeal in the matter, threatening him with re-imprisonment.

On April 25, 2019, an appeals court confirmed the judgment against Kart and five other members of the editorial team. They then had to serve long-term prison sentences. A higher instance overturned the judgment on September 12, 2019, so that Kart was released from custody on the same day after 142 days. With him four other former Cumhuriyet journalists were released.

In the run-up to a state visit by Turkish President Erdoğan in September 2018, caricatures by Musa Kart will be shown in the exhibition “ We die with laughter - 50 years of caricature turkey ” in the art space Bethanien in Berlin-Kreuzberg.
