Cartooning for Peace ( Draw for Peace ) is a network comprising about 200 international press cartoonists together. It works to promote freedom of expression, human rights and mutual respect between peoples of different cultures or beliefs through the universal language of cartoons .

founding

The French draftsman Plantu convinced the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to organize an exhibition on Cartooning for Peace even before the conflicts over the Mohammed caricatures in 2005 and the subsequent debates on freedom of the press and the moral limits of caricatures . The exhibition took place, accompanied by a congress, at the New York headquarters of the United Nations in 2006. At the initiative of Plantu and Annan, the Cartooning for Peace network was founded on October 16, 2006, which was established in 2008 as an association under French law (Association loi de 1901). The network is based in Paris.

With the support of the Swiss Foreign Ministry and the United Nations Office, the Cartooning for Peace Foundation was founded under Swiss law in 2010 by the cartoonists Chappatte (Switzerland) and Plantu (France) and Marie Heuzé, former spokeswoman for the United Nations, in Geneva. Kofi Annan was honorary president of the foundation until 2018.

Effective range

Cartooning for Peace aims to contribute to the recognition of press cartoons by organizing exhibitions, meetings with the public or in an educational context, and by helping cartoonists in trouble worldwide. In addition, cartoon books on current topics are regularly published, which are published in French by Gallimard . The books have already been translated into several languages.

Since 2012, the Swiss Foundation for Cartooning for Peace and the city of Geneva have awarded the “Prix International du dessin de presse de Genève” every two years, which was awarded to the Turkish cartoonist Musa Kart in 2018 .
