Jacques Toubon

Jacques Toubon (born June 29, 1941 in Nice ) is a French politician .

From 1981 to 1993 he was a member of the National Assembly , from 1984 to 1988 Secretary General of the conservative RPR and from 1993 to 1997 served as Minister of Culture (1993–1995) and Minister of Justice (1995–1997) in the government. In connection with his tenure as Minister of Justice, he was investigated on suspicion of obstructing investigations against party friends. From 2004 to 2009 he sat for the UMP in the European Parliament . There he was u. a. Member of the “Steering Committee”, the parliamentary steering committee of the A Soul for Europe initiative .

Toubon became known beyond France as minister of culture through the Loi Toubon , a law to avoid Anglicisms in the French language . This law earned him the nickname Jack Allgood , a literal translation of his name into English.
