Alain Peyrefitte

Alain Antoine Peyrefitte (born August 26, 1925 in Najac ( Aveyron department ), † November 27, 1999 in Paris ) was a French politician, author and member of the Académie française . He was a long-time member of the Assemblée nationale and held several ministerial posts.

After graduating from high school in Montpellier , Peyrefitte studied philosophy, law and humanities at both the École normal supérieure and the École nationale d'administration , and did research in the field of anthropology at the Center national de la recherche scientifique .

Peyrefitte embarked on a diplomatic career and received posts, inter alia, at the French embassy in Bonn (1949-1952) and at the consulate in Krakow (1954-1956). As a collaborator and confidante of Charles de Gaulle , he was elected to the French National Assembly for the Gaullist party Union pour la Nouvelle République in 1958 . He was also represented in the General Council of the Seine-et-Marne department for Bray-sur-Seine from 1964 to 1988 and Mayor of Provins from 1965 to 1997 . In April 1962 he was appointed State Secretary for Information in the first Georges Pompidous cabinet and from September 1962 headed the Ministries for Resettlement, Information, Research and Education. Due to the events of May 1968 , Peyrefitte resigned from his ministerial office.

In the period up to 1973, in which he was not a member of the government, he took over the chairmanship of the Committee on Cultural and Social Affairs in the National Assembly (1968-1972) and held the post of General Secretary of the Gaullist Union des Démocrates pour la from 1972 to 1983 Ve République (UDR) . After a trip to China in 1971, he published Quand la Chine s'éveillera… le monde tremblera, an analysis of Chinese society in the 1970s, which attracted great public attention. In May 1973 he was reappointed to the French government and briefly held the ministerial posts for administrative reforms (until February 1974) and culture and the environment (until May 1975). A longer term followed from 1977 to 1981 when he headed the Ministry of Justice. He then took no more posts in the government and remained a member of the Assemblée nationale until he was elected Senator for the Seine-et-Marne department in 1995 .

The literary work of Peyrefitte includes the youth novel Les Roseaux froissés and the Mémoiren C'était de Gaulle mainly essays and contributions to journals and magazines such as Les Cahiers du Sud , Le Point and Le Figaro .

In 1977 he was elected to the Académie française, where he took the seat of Paul Morand . Ten years later he was accepted into the history section of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques .

Alain Peyrefitte died of cancer on November 27, 1999 in Paris.

He was honored with the order of the Légion d'Honneur .
