Xavier Darcos (born July 14, 1947 in Limoges ) is a French politician ( UMP ). From June 23, 2009 to March 2010, he held the post of French Minister of Labor.

After studying to be a teacher in Bordeaux, which he completed with a doctorate, he taught at a Lycée in Bordeaux from 1982 to 1987 . From 1987 to 1992 he taught at another Lycée in Paris before he was appointed to the National School Inspectorate (IGEN) in 1992. From 1994 to 1995 he worked on the staff of the then Education Minister François Bayrou . He then returned to the school inspectorate and taught from 1996 to 1999 at the Paris-Sorbonne University.

From May 2002 to March 2004 he was State Secretary under Education Minister Luc Ferry and from March 2004 to June 2005 State Secretary for Development Cooperation and Francophonie in the Foreign Ministry headed by Michel Barnier . In June 2005 he was appointed French ambassador to the OECD . On May 18, 2007, Darcos was appointed French Minister of Education and, after a cabinet reshuffle, took over the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Family and Solidarity in June 2009.

After the government camp suffered significant losses in the French regional elections in March 2010 against the left-wing electoral alliances made up of socialists and Greens, Sarkozy reshaped his government. Darcos' Ministry of Labor was newly appointed as a key department by Éric Woerth . Darcos himself will be given a different "responsibility" . In his region, the politician had only won 28 percent of the vote.

From 1978 to 2008 Darcos was consistently active in French local politics. a. as Mayor of Périgueux (Aquitaine region) and Senator for the Dordogne department (Aquitaine region).

On June 13, 2013, Darcos was elected to succeed Pierre-Jean Rémy in the Académie française . He occupies seat no. 40 there.
