Christine Albanel

Christine Marie Albanel (born June 25, 1955 in Toulouse , Haute-Garonne Department ) is a French writer and politician who is a member of the UMP . From May 2007 to June 2009 she was Minister for Culture and Communication under Prime Minister François Fillon and government spokeswoman .

Life

Christine Albanels entry into politics began in 1979 with her work as a press officer for the then President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing . She stayed that way until the end of Giscard d'Estaing's tenure in 1981. After that, she taught at a lycée in Luzarches ( Val-d'Oise ) for almost a year , but then gave up teaching. By the end of Giscard d'Estaing's term of office, she had already established close contacts with the then mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac , who continued her entire career at his side.

From 1982 to 1986 she worked at the Paris City Hall as an advisor to the Director General for Information and Communication. Albanel, who also made a name for herself as a playwright during this period ( La Maison Ambuse , 1981; Les Palhasses , 1983; Hôtel Sawat et de la plage , 1984), became a ghostwriter ( "plume" ) of Jacques Chirac and wrote during numerous speeches for him throughout his further career. When Chirac became Prime Minister in 1986 (1st cohabitation with François Mitterrand 1986 to 1988), he appointed Christine Albanel to his cabinet. In 1988, two years later, Albanel went back to the Paris City Hall as Deputy Cabinet Director of Mayor Jacques Chirac (from 1977 to 1995). After Chirac was elected President in 1995 , he appointed Albanel as his advisor for education and culture, then, in 2000, as State Councilor .

In July 2003 she was appointed President of the Museum and State Goods of the Palace of Versailles to succeed Hubert Astier . The occupation of this post by a person who came from the administration and was not a certified conservator or scientist, aroused sometimes fierce criticism from curators and art historians. In addition, it was assumed that Albanel only got this post because of her long-term close collaboration with Jacques Chirac. As a result, Albanel was accused of converting Versailles into an amusement park, among other things because she approved the shooting of Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette ” there . The 51-year-old is an old friend of President Nicolas Sarkozy , according to the Nouvel Observateur .

On May 18, 2007, she was appointed Minister of Culture and Communication and Government Spokeswoman in the François Fillon government. She left the government in the course of a cabinet reshuffle on June 23, 2009. In the Ministry of Culture, she replaced Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres .

She joined Orange in the private sector in 2010 and has been Head of the Department for "Events, Cultural and Institutional Partnerships and Solidarity" since June 2012.
