Life

Origin and education

Roselyn Bachelot was born in 1946 as the daughter of the doctor and politician Jean Narquin and his wife Yvette Le Dû. She completed her training with a doctorate in pharmacy . She has a son from her marriage to Jacques Bachelot.

Political career

Her entry into politics took place as an elected member of the city and general council in Angers from June 1995 to March 2001 or the Maine-et-Loire department for the Gaullist RPR between March 1982 and June 1998. From 1986 she was also a member of the regional council of the Pays de la Loire region , where she was Vice-Presidency from April 2001 to March 2004. In 1988 Roselyn Bachelot was also elected as a deputy to the National Assembly. She sat there until 2004, when she also took over her father's seat in the 1st constituency of Maine-et-Loire.

Due to her natural demeanor, with which she attracted attention in dry politics, she often came into the media and achieved a high level of awareness. Her parliamentary plea in November 1998 contributed to this when she stood up for the Pacte civil de solidarité (PACS), the French equivalent of the registered partnership , and stood against her own parliamentary group. In the Union pour un mouvement populaire (UMP), founded in 2002 as the successor to the RPR , she became deputy general secretary.

In the 2002 presidential election, she was the spokesperson for Jacques Chirac's election campaign . After his election victory, she became Minister for Environment and Sustainable Development in the Jean-Pierre Raffarin government (2002-2004) and gave up her mandate. As Environment Minister, she advocated the use of nuclear power. After losing the regional elections in 2004, she resigned with the entire government and was not appointed to the second Raffarin government.

In 2004 she was elected to the European Parliament in the European elections on the UMP list and held this office from June 2004 to May 17, 2007. At the end of 2006 she publicly advised Jacques Chirac not to seek a third term as president. In May 2007, Bachelot resigned from the European Parliament to take up a ministerial post in the Fillon II cabinet. Elisabeth Morin moved up for her in the European Parliament.
