Edmond Michelet

Edmond Michelet (born October 8, 1899 in Paris , † October 9, 1970 in Marcillac-la-Croisille , Département Corrèze ) was a French politician ( MRP , RPF ). He was Minister of Defense (1945–46), Veterans (1958–59), Justice (1959–61), Civil Service (1967–68) and Culture (1970–71). From 1962 to 1967 he was a member of the Conseil constitutionnel (constitutional court).

Life

In his youth he was shaped by his Catholic environment. In 1930 he became President of the Catholic Youth in the Corrèze department .

In 1940 he joined the emerging Resistance . In February 1943 he was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in Fresnes prison south of Paris. There he was also looked after by the prison chaplain Abbé Franz Stock . In September 1943 Michelet was deported to the Dachau concentration camp and liberated there by the 7th US Army in June 1945 . Together with other survivors he founded the Comité International de Dachau . Michelet then campaigned for Franco-German reconciliation and European unification.

As a member of the Christian Democratic Mouvement républicain populaire (MRP), he was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1945. At the same time he was in the Provisional Government of Charles de Gaulle from November 21, 1945 to June 24, 1946 Minister of Defense of France. From 1946 he was a member of the Corrèze department in the French National Assembly . In 1947 he joined de Gaulle's Rassemblement du peuple français (RPF) party. From 1952 to 1959 he was senator of the Seine department . From October 1957 to June 1958 he was Vice President of the Conseil de la République.

After de Gaulle was elected President , Michelet became State Secretary for War Veterans on June 9, 1958. From January 8, 1959 to August 24, 1961 he was Minister of Justice. From 1962 to 1967 he was a member of the Conseil constitutionnel (constitutional court). From April 6, 1967 to May 31, 1968 he was Minister of State for the Civil Service and from June 20, 1969 until his death Minister of State for Culture .

From 1962 to 1964 Michelet was President of the European Documentation and Information Center (CEDI) .
