Life

After graduating from Lycée Henri IV , he first studied medicine for two years and then moved to the École Saint-Luc in Brussels in 1971 to take courses in drawing. On October 1, 1972, he was able to publish his first cartoon in the daily newspaper Le Monde . In 1974 Le Monde diplomatique followed , where he took up third world issues in a critical manner .

Every working day Le Monde prints one of its cartoons on current political events in France. One of the hallmarks, usually in the lower right corner of the leaf, is an observing mouse. In 2000 he celebrated the 30th anniversary of his collaboration with Le Monde , for which he had drawn 15,000 caricatures by then.

Since moving to the Le Monde editorial office in the south of Paris belongs Plantu the Paris cityscape. His drawing of a dove of peace with an olive branch in its beak, the wings of which are pages from Le Monde , adorns the large facade of the building on Boulevard Auguste Blanqui.

At the beginning of September 2013, Plantu made international headlines because he was sued by the arch-conservative Catholic organization against racism and for respect for French and Christian identity (Agrif) for “inciting hatred and religious discrimination”. In March 2010, Plantu published a caricature on the abuse scandals in the Catholic Church on his website under the heading “Pedophilia: The Pope takes a position” , which was then taken over and printed by the daily Le Monde . The caricature shows Pope Benedict XVI. during anal intercourse with a child. The date for the cartoon trial was set for July 1, 2014. Plantureux was acquitted on September 30, 2014, and the court costs were imposed on the complainants.
